Shafin Ahmed: Government stages drama of halting DNCC election

Shafin Ahmed, who secured the backing of Bobby Hajjaj’s Nationalist Democratic Movement (NDM) to contest for mayoral post in Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), has accused the government of staging a "drama of halting election" surmising their defeat. The Election Commission (EC) on Wednesday suspended all proceedings of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) election following a High Court order that stayed the election for three months.

The lead singer of band Miles, at a press conference at the office of NDM’s chairman in Dhaka’s Banani area on Wednesday, also alleged that the government has "intentionally foiled" the election, which was scheduled to take place on February 26. “People are annoyed as the promises made before the last DNCC election eventually proven to be false,” claims Shafin. He said he was surprised to see the Election Commission announced the election schedule without providing any clear explanation on the voter list update and the duration of the councillors of 18 newly-formed wards.
