The United Kingdom unit of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) was scheduled to hold its council meeting on January 2, but internal conflicts caused plans to be scrapped at the eleventh hour.
BNP UK unit Joint General Secretary Taj Uddin confirmed the postponement to the Bangla Tribune.
Taj Uddin said a meeting chaired by of BNP's Central International Affairs Secretary Mahidur Rahman took place on Monday night (London time). The council meeting was scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.
The Monday night meeting was set to address several controversies surrounding the council. UK BNP Vice President Akhter Hossain raised several allegations against MA Malek and Kausar Ahmed, the president and secretary general of the UK chapter of BNP.
Akhter said Malek and Kausar were responsible for various irregularities including forming committees.
His complaints were submitted in written form to BNP Senior Vice Chairman Tarique Rahman, who is currently living in London, asking for his intervention in the matter.
In addition, the Tuesday afternoon council meeting venue was not known to anyone other than Malek and Kausar.
In light of these events, it was decided to postpone the council meeting.
Several UK BNP leaders expressed their satisfaction with the decision, mostly supporting Akhter’s crusade against the other two leaders.
