Awami League’s landslide defeat in the Rangpur City Corporation polls was unanticipated. When several top leaders of the party met with party President Sheikh Hasina at Ganabhaban on Saturday night, they were told to find out the reasons behind the defeat.
The party presidium members still appeared to be gracious in defeat, noting that it was a sign of an inclusive and fair election which ultimately reflected on the government.
But Sheikh Hasina is not so eager to let the huge defeat slide easily. She asked the leaders to find out whether the fault was with picking the right candidate or lack of support.
Several leaders said the defeat by itself was affordable, but the wide margin was far too much to ignore.
