The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has not yet decided whether they will participate in the upcoming Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) by-polls.
“We have yet to reach a decision on contesting in the DNCC mayoral by-polls, though we have participated in all local elections,” BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said at the party's central office in Naya Paltan, Dhaka on Wednesday.
Addressing a press conference at the party office, the senior BNP leader also expressed profound sorrow at the passing of DNCC mayor Annisul Huq.
“I personally knew Annisul Huq. He never seemed to be a complex politician. He tried to do something different in the political arena," he said while remembering the late mayor.
Speaking of the upcoming 11th parliamentarian election, Mirza Fakhrul reiterated his party's stance on the matter.
“We want an election, but not while the Awami League is in power and the current prime minister still holds office. The election must be transparent, participatory and neutral. We are ready to take part in such an election even if it takes place tomorrow,” he added.
