Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader and BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir exchanged greetings following a serendipitous encounter at the Saidpur airport in Nilphamari.
The meeting occurred on Sunday afternoon at the VIP lounge of Saidpur airport. They were waiting for a return flight to Dhaka following their visit to the victims of recent communal violence in Rangpur’s Gangachhora upazila.
Awami League Organising Secretary BM Mozammel and BNP Press Wing official Shairul Kabir Khan separately confirmed the incident to the Bangla Tribune.
BM Mozammel said: “Quader went to meet the BNP leader after learning that the latter was also waiting for his flight in a separate room in the lounge.”
During their meeting, Quader told Fakhrul: “I was waiting for you at the Dhaka airport. But later I heard that you were not coming today. It would have been great if we could take the same flight.”
Fakhrul, in his reply, said: “I was supposed to take the morning flight but had to postpone it due to my wife’s illness."
Furthermore, the Awami League MP said: “As we are in politics, it is better for us to open the paths of discussion."
Fakhrul replied: “I am enthralled by your behaviour. You have shown good manners.”
Later, the two leaders took separate return flights to Dhaka.
