Thousands of leaders and activists of the BNP have begun gathering in front of Institute of Engineers' Bangladesh to attend the party's sixth council.
Since morning on Saturday, BNP supporters and members marched peacefully towards the venue from different parts of the capital.
There have not been any reports of untoward incident anywhere in the capital. The programme is set to start in a short time.
Ahead of the council, huge traffic congestion was created in the Shahbagh to Matsya Bhaban intersection.
The council venue and its adjacent areas were decorated with thousands of banners, posters, placards and festoons.
A partial place of historic Suhrawrady Udyan was decorated for the delegates. Big screens were placed in different places so that they can watch the programme directly staying in distant places.
The last council of BNP was held on December 8, 2009 where Khandker Delwar Hossain was made the secretary general.
Mirza Fakhrul was made the acting secretary general after his death in 2011.
Party charter stipulates BNP to hold national councils every three years, but the last time the party held a council was in December 2009.
