BNP invites Awami League President Sheikh Hasina to its national council

The BNP yesterday invited Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to its sixth national council scheduled for March 19.

A delegation led by BNP leaders Abul Khayer Bhuyan, Abdul Latif Jony, Asadul Karm Saheen and Selimuzzaman Selim went to Awami League’s Dhanmondi office at 5pm to deliver the invitation letter.

Jony, BNP’s assistant office secretary, told the Dhaka Tribune that Awami League leader Abdul Awal Shamim and Masudul Hasan received the letter.

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia called party’s standing committee meeting tonight at her Gulshan office to take important decisions on party’s national council. Syrul Kabir Khan, an official of Khaleda’s press wing, told the Dhaka Tribune that the meeting will be held at 8:30pm. “The chairperson convened it to take decision on some important issues on BNP’s council.”

Khaleda is scheduled to inaugurate the party’s council on March 19 at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh in the morning.

Party sources said the meeting could discuss responsibility of party’s Senior Vice Chairman Tarique Rahman, increase of number of posts of joint secretary generals, organising secretaries and formation of party’s advisory committee.

Meanwhile, the party yesterday said the resignation of Bangladesh Bank governor Atiur Rahman and removal of two of his deputies was part of an effort to shield the masterminds of a huge cyber heist that targeted the central bank’s money.

“The cyber theft stunned people across the globe. It is not difficult for the people to guess who were behind it. It is very clear to the nation that high-level people from the ruling party are involved in the scam,” BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi claimed at a media briefing at BNP’s Nayapaltan headquarters.

He said a case was filed 40 days after the incident. “It is very mysterious. So, is the government trying to hide the real culprits?”

Rizvi said it would not be possible to hide the masterminds by removing two deputy governors and resignation of governor Atiur.

“The country has turned into a heaven for the looters. It seems that they are looting public money before stepping down from the office, so that they can use it when the situation comes to escape from the scene,” he claimed.
