Supreme Court stays Mirza Abbas’ bail

The Supreme Court has stayed BNP senior leader Mirza Abbas’ bail in a graft case for a week, halting his release from prison.

A five-member bench of the Appellate Division, led by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha, issued the order yesterday in response to a petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

The apex court also asked the ACC to file a leave-to-appeal petition against the High Court’s bail order within a week.

On March 9, the High Court granted bail to Abbas in the graft case.

On March 6, 2014, the ACC filed the graft case with Shahbagh police station against Abbas for causing the state a loss of Tk16 crore by allocating seven acres of Rajuk’s land to a journalists’ cooperative society at a lower rate when he was the housing and public works minister of the BNP-led four-party alliance government.
