The High Court yesterday granted bail to former BNP minister Mirza Abbas in a corruption case.
The bench of Justice Md Ruhul Quddus and Justice Mahmudul Hoque granted the bail after hearing a petition.
His lawyer Sagir Hossain Leon said that Abbas, also a member of the BNP's Standing Committee, was sent to jail on January 6 after he had surrendered before it in the case. After the High Court order, there is no bar for his release from jail.
The Anti-Corruption Commission filed the case on March 6, 2014 with Shahbagh police. The case says that Abbas while serving as the housing and the public works minister during 2001-06 allocated seven acres of Rajuk land to a journalists' cooperative society at a lower rate causing the state a loss of Tk16 crore.
