The Awami League was considering the rescheduling of the date for holding its March 28 triennial national council because of the upcoming UP elections, said party's Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif.
He said: “We are mulling rescheduling the date for holding our 20th triennial national council due to the upcoming union parishad polls scheduled to be held on March 22.”
The ruling party leader made the disclosure at a press conference at Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's Dhanmondi political office on Wednesday.
He told journalists that the upcoming meeting of the party's Central Working Committee would discuss the new date.
He said: “We are going to hold the UP elections along the party line for the first time in history. Most of our central leaders would be busy arranging everything related to the polls in their localities.
“So, we are considering deferment of the March 28 party council.”
Earlier on January 9, the party fixed March 28 for holding its 20th triennial national council.
The 19th council of the Awami League was held on December 29, 2012.
