AL’s March 28 council deferral unlikely

There is no possibility that the Awami League’s 20th triennial national council scheduled for March 28 will be rescheduled, party sources told the Dhaka Tribune.

It was earlier reported that the council was likely to be rescheduled because of the union parishad elections beginning from March 22.

Denying such reports, an Awami League leader yesterday told the Dhaka Tribune on condition of anonymity that the union parishad polls would not be an obstacle to March 28 council.

“The council will be held on schedule if no major untoward situation arises,” he said.

On January 9, the Awami League set the council schedule at a meeting of the party’s central working committee chaired by party chief Sheikh Hasina at Gonobhaban.

At the meeting, Public Administration Minister Syed Ashraful Islam was tasked with forming sub-committees for the council.

After the meeting, Ashraful, also the party’s general secretary, said the council would be held at the historic Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital.

The sub-committee formed to design the stage for the council yesterday held a meeting at Hasina’s Dhanmondi office. Several central leaders of the party and Chhatra League leaders joined the meeting.

The committee will hold another meeting on February 28 at a community centre in Dhanmondi.

The 19th council of the Awami League was held on December 29, 2012. Hasina was re-elected the president and Syed Ashraful the general secretary.

According to party insiders, chances are high that the top two posts of the party will see no change in the upcoming council, and there will be no major change in the full committee either.
