Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid has said the government decided to take an effective measure to active Chhatra Shangsad in all higher educational institutions across the country.
“Aiming to create a healthy political atmosphere in higher educational institutions, we are planning to take the step,” the minister told the Parliament on Thursday.
Stressed the need for a more proactive role of students in the politics of the country, he further said: “We cannot create a congenial political atmosphere in the country until the students practice constructive and peaceful politics.
“Student politics is the spinning house of practicing democracy and it had played a glorious role in our politics.”
He also claimed that Chhatra Sangsad is still active in some colleges and universities like it was active in the past.
The minister, however, did not mention in which university Chhatra Sangsad is active.
Last polls to Dhaka University Central Students Union (Ducsu) were held in 1990.
Demand for the elections appears to be resurfacing again and again among general students as the country's premier university along with others of its kind has not seen activities of the crucial students' forum for a long time.
