Awami League Advisory Council member Suranjit Sengupta yesterday demanded proper punishment for BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia so that none could dare to commit crimes like sedition in the future.
The senior lawmaker of Awami League raised the demand while speaking as the chief guest at a condolence meeting organised by Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote at Shilpakala Academy at Segunbagicha in the city in memory of acting president of Dhaka City Awami League (AL) MA Aziz, who breathed his last on Saturday, reports BSS.
Suranjit, also chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Ministry, said: “Everything relating to the War of Liberation has been included in the constitution. And for this reason, there is no scope to create controversy over the War of Liberation.
“Moreover, case will be lodged if anybody expresses doubt (confusion) over the figure of 30 lakh (three million) martyrs and even the full stops and commas as written in the constitution regarding the War of Liberation. None is above the laws of the land. There’s no scope of getting pardon after committing crime.”
He said: “A case has been lodged against Khaleda Zia for expressing her doubt over the figure of martyrs in the War of Liberation. But it doesn’t mean that she will be arrested the next day and dragged out (of her residence).”
The senior leader of the ruling Awami League said: “The country is not under martial law now. She can surrender before the court and she can even pray for bail. None in Bangladesh is above law. So, I would like to suggest her to have respect towards the laws of the land.”
