Jessore AL man shot in factional conflict

An activist of the ruling Awami League has been shot allegedly by party rivals over establishing dominance in Jessore city.

The incident took place on Ghop-Noapara Road in Jessore town around 12pm Thursday.

Md Sabbir, 25, was admitted to the 250-bed Jessore General Hospital with gunshot wounds.

Sabbir said: “Rakib, Foysal, Shamim and Hannan fired at me. They all recently joined the AL after quitting the BNP. They are followers of Jessore unit Awami League Secretary Shahin Chaklader.”

Sabbir, who claimed to be a follower of Milon, the unit's president, said his assailants attacked him for not joining their group.

Kotwali police station Sub-Inspector Tarek Nahian said: “An intra-party conflict was behind the incident. The victim has been able to identify some of his attackers.”

Action will be taken against the miscreants, the SI said.
