The Awami League is trying to split the opposition alliance after it has been bankrupted, the BNP acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has alleged.
“The Awami League that fought for democracy, it seems now a days that it has turned into a politically bankrupted party. If it was not so then it would not try to split the other political alliance,” he said at a programme on Saturday.
“They (AL) should work on strengthening democracy, rather they are trying to weaken opposition alliance.”
While addressing a programme of its alliance Bangladesh Labour Party's council at Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh, Fakhrul said: “There is no democratic atmosphere in the country. We cannot hold any rally, meeting and even we were barred to hold rally inside our office.”
The acting secretary general said not only the opposition but the different views were repressed in the country.
He urged all the patriotic forces to get united burying all the differences to restore democracy in the country.
Fakhrul also raised question about the role of the media.
“We became surprised when we see the media just try to find out the faults of the opposition party. What is the fault of BNP? BNP might have faults but we do not see media to raise voice against those who snatched away people's fundamental rights.”
He claimed that Awami League have destroyed the electoral process in the country.
“People cannot cast their votes today. People cannot cast their votes in January 5 elections, then Upazila elections, then municipality polls. Union Parishad election is ahead and people will not be able to cast their votes there too.”
