The BNP has said that the ruling Awami League has rejected the call for political dialogues out of a fear of losing power.
“The only intention of the government is staying in office forcibly and not giving democratic space others,” said Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, joint secretary general of the BNP, during a press briefing at the party’s Nayapaltan central office.
“Because, if they give anyone democratic space, then they will not be able to stay in office. A change in power will take place,” Rizvi said.
During a rare public rally in the capital on Tuesday, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia called upon the Awami League-led government to hold political dialogues immediately to resolve the prevailing political crisis.
Yesterday, just a day after the rally, the ruling party ruled out any chances of political talks.
Rizvi also claimed that the ruling party is scared after seeing the massive crowd at BNP’s rally.
“BNP leaders and activists were barred from attending the rally. We got permission to hold the rally around 7pm and then we started our preparations. You [journalists] also see how the people have prepared. The government is now in fear seeing this,” the BNP leader added.
He also accused the ruling party of continuing crossfire and arrest against the opposition leaders just to stay in office.
He also said that the Election Commission’s claim that 74% votes had been cast during the recent municipality polls was not true.
