AL, BNP get CMP nod for holding rallies

The ruling Awami League and Bangladesh Nationalist Party have obtained conditional permission from Chittagong Metropolitan Police to hold rallies on Tuesday in the port city of Chittagong.

Debdas Bhattacharya, CMP Additional Commissioner (Crime and Operation) confirmed the Dhaka Tribune that the two parties were given conditional permission to hold rallies.

“AL will hold rally in front of Central Shaheed Minar in the city while BNP will hold rally inside the BNP’s Nasiman Bhaban office at Kazir Dewri area in the city,” said the additional commissioner.

He warned that stern actions would be taken if any untoward incidents develop over the rallies.

Mahbubur Rahman Shamim, member of the BNP central committee said they obtained permission from the police for holding rally in Chittagong city’s Kazir Dewri area.

“The parties have been directed not to cause public sufferings by creating congestion on the streets. They also have to arrange gatherings in the areas set by the police,” said the police official.

The arch-rival - AL and BNP - declared the programmes to celebrate and condemn the January 5, 2014 general election.

On January 5, 2014, the BNP boycotted the national parliamentary elections, refusing to take part in an election under the then incumbent AL government and restoration of the caretaker government system.
