Leaders and activists of BNP’s associate bodies yesterday clashed with a group, who called themselves the “real” BNP, in front of the party’s Nayapaltan office.
Around quarter to four in the afternoon, several hundred activists of “Ashol BNP” - ashol meaning real – brought out a procession from the Fakirerpool intersection and headed towards the Nayapaltan office of the BNP.
Witnesses said they there chanting slogans and holding placards in the name of Ziaur Rahman, the founder of BNP.
When they reached near the BNP office around 3:40pm, activists of BNP’s youth and student fronts – Jubo Dal and Chhatra Dal – took on the procession, using sticks to beat them up.
Several crude-bombs were exploded during the skirmish that went on for several minutes.
At least 10 people, including a journalist, were injured in the clash. Later, the men from “Ashol BNP” fled the scene.
Kamrul Hasan Nasim, leader of the “Ashol BNP,” confirmed the incident. He also alleged that Jubo Dal and Chhatra Dal men charged crude bombs at their men.
Asked why they were going to the Nayapaltan office, Kamrul said his men were going to there to have some discussions.
