BNP seeks permission for rally on Jan 5

The BNP has sought permission to hold a rally in the capital's Suhrawardy Udyan on January 5 to observe what the party terms “Democracy Killing Day.”

A letter has already been sent to the authorities of Dhaka Metropolitan Police in this regard, said party’s acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

Addressing a press briefing on Saturday after holding a joint meeting with leaders of party's front and associate organisations in the capital's Nayapaltan headquarters, he said: “As part of our movement for restoration of democracy on the occasion of the Democracy Killing Day, we will hold a peaceful rally at Suhrawardy Udyan.”

“Apart from Dhaka's rally, all the district units will also observe the day by holding discussions in their respective offices on the day,” added Fakhrul.

The BNP leader said they have already sought permission from Dhaka Metropolitan Police and the Suhrawardy Udyan authorities for the programme.

“We hope that the government and the authorities concerned will help make the rally a success and allow systematic continuation of democracy,” he said.

Last year, BNP tried to hold a similar programme styled “black day for democracy” ended in three months of agitation that left over a 100 people dead in violence.

After boycotting January 5, 2014 elections, BNP waged a 99-day blockade on rail, water and roadways when they were denied to host a gathering in Dhaka’s Paltan area, near their office, on the first anniversary of the polls.
