The BNP’s participation in the municipality elections proved that the Awami League-led government is legal, said Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif yesterday.
He said the BNP contested the polls because it had realised its mistakes, but also blamed the party for rejecting election results.
Hanif was addressing a press briefing at Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi office in the capital.
Earlier in the day, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir rejected Wednesday’s election results, and called for both the government and the Election Commission to quit office.
Hanif said Fakhrul’s remark about the polls is an insult to people’s mandate.
He said BNP leaders would never respect the people of Bangladesh because their minds are engulfed by Pakistan.
“The BNP has lost its popularity. It even failed to have agents in all the municipal polling stations during Wednesday’s polls,” Hanif added.
