Appeal application of BNP mayoral nominee rejected

Appeal applications of two nomination cancelled mayoral candidates were rejected yesterday by the Appellate Authority and deputy commissioner of Moulvibazar.

The rejected appeals were of BNP mayoral candidate Md Oliur Rahman from Moulvibazar municipality and Awami League rebel candidate Rayna Begum from Baralekha municipality.

Lawyers of the two candidates said the Appellate Authority upheld the decisions of the respective returning officers and rejected the appeal applications.

On December 6, the returning officer of Moulvibazar municipality cancelled the nomination of Oliur Rahman as he did not submit the receipt of his last income tax return with his nomination paper.

Later, Oliur submitted an appeal application to the Appellate Authority against the decision.

On the same day, the nomination of Awami League rebel candidate Rayna from Baralekha municipality was cancelled by the returning officer stating that her paper was faulty. She later submitted an appeal application.

Advocate Mujibur Rahman, Advocate Emad Uddin Chawdhury and Advocate Golam Robbany appeared on behalf of BNP nominee Oliur Rahman at the appeal hearing which started around 9am yesterday.

Talking to this correspondent, the lawyers said they will go to the higher court to challenge the verdict after they receive its certified copy.
