Voters in Moulvibazar are surprised at the decision of two incumbent municipality mayors not to contest the upcoming elections.
Faizul Karim Mayun, former general secretary of BNP’s Moulvibazar district unit and mayor of Moulvibazar municipality, was fielded by his party but he announced two days before submitting his nomination form that he would retreat from the mayoral race.
After his announcement, the BNP fielded Oliur Rahman, who is the president of the party’s Moulvibazar municipality unit and councillor of Ward 5.
Oliur submitted his nomination form but voters are still talking about why Mayun chose not to take part in the polls.
Mayun told the Dhaka Tribune that he was not contesting the elections on grounds of health. “There is no mystery. As I am sick, it is not possible for me to be a candidate in the polls.”
For elections in Baralekha municipality, the BNP nominated Fakhrul Islam, the incumbent mayor of the municipality, but he also refrained from submitting his nomination form.
The party then fielded Anwarul Islam, president of BNP’s Baralekha municipality unit.
Fakhrul told the Dhaka Tribune that he would not be in the mayoral race for personal reasons.
