The BNP is laying out a plan to speed up its activities in Chittagong using the upcoming municipality polls as an occasion.
A plan is already on to conduct full-hearted election campaign in the 10 municipalities of the district – Sandwip, Banshkhali, Chandanaish, Satkania, Mirsarai, Patiya, Raozan, Rangunia, Baryarhat and Sitakunda – that will voting on December 30.
Insiders say that several top central leaders are scheduled come to the district soon and conduct electioneering in favour of the candidates nominated by the party. They are supposed to be joined by senior local leaders along with the grassroots.
Some of the central leaders scheduled to come here are: Vice-Chairman Abdullah Al Noman, adviser to the chairperson Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, former city mayor Mir Mohammad Nasir Uddin, Organising Secretary Golam Akbar Khondokar, former minister Jafrul Islam Chowdhury and Aslam Chowdhury.
Insiders also said that party chief Khaleda Zia will sit with the senior leaders in a day or two to fix campaign and election strategy and assign the leaders for different tasks.
BNP central executive committee member Mahbuber Rahman Shamim told the Dhaka Tribune: “The top brass will exchange views with the electorates and the grassroots. We think the central leaders’ visit will surely give a fresh impetus to the parties local rank and file.”
He also said: “We want to use the municipal polls as an opportunity to rejuvenate our politics. We want to give a fitting reply [to critics] by doing well in the upcoming polls.”
