‘Shamim Osman will be tried, if ...’

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal yesterday said that Narayanganj Awami League lawmaker Shamim Osman would be brought to trail if his involvement in the much-talked seven-murder was found.

“The government will show zero tolerance on this matter,” the minister said at a programme in the city.

Asked about the leaked phone conversation between MP Shamim and Nur Hossain, the prime accused in the cases, released soon after the murders, the minister said that they were looking into the matter.

“No one will be spared,” he said, adding that the investigators were yet to find involvement of Shamim Osman in the killings.

Seven people, including Narayanganj City Corporation ward councillor Nazrul Islam and lawyer Chandan Sarker, were abducted on April 27 last year. Their bodies were later found floating in the Shitalakkhya River.

Nur initially denied his involvement in the killings but subsequently went into hiding in India. He was brought back to the country on Thursday night. A Narayanganj court sent him to jail the next day.

The detective branch of police submitted the charge sheets on April 8.

Relatives of the seven victims burst into anger on the court premises as the police did not seek remand of Nur. Plaintiff of one of two cases Selina Islam beauty said they would move the High Court seeking fresh investigation to unearth the mystery behind the killings.

According to the audio, Nur had sought help from the lawmaker before leaving the country.

On June 3 last year, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the parliament defended the Osman family of Narayanganj saying: “Small offences of their families are always magnified, while big offences of others are ignored by the vested interests.”

Shahidul Islam, father-in-law of Nazrul, claimed that Nur had given the Rapid Action Battalion personnel Tk6 crore to carry out the murders. Elite police force RAB also found the involvement of over two dozens officials in the killings.

Former Awami League-backed ward councillor Nur allegedly bribed the RAB men for murdering Nazrul with whom he reportedly had a long-standing political feud. Lawyer Chandan and his driver were killed as they happened to witness the RAB men abducting Nazrul and his associates.
