Repeated factional clashes between rival factions of Bangladesh Chhatra League have made the campus of Chittagong University restive, much to create panic among students.
Senior party leaders said lack of coordination between grass-root level leaders and central leaders and petty personal interest of BCL leaders are responsible for back-to-back clashes on the campus.
Former president of CU BCL Abul Monsur Jamshed told the Dhaka Tribune that the restive situation had created for lack of dedicated leaders towards party.
“They actually do not uphold the ideology of the party. I feel ashamed of being a BCL man as my fellows are fighting among themselves.”
Another BCL leader seeking anonymity said the BCL high command did not support university unit BCL financially to meet expenses of political programmes.
“Consequently, they get engaged in different types of crimes including, extortion, on the campus,” he said.
Most of the times these groups lock into clashes over silly matter to demonstrate their strength to party high command as well as to grab vital position in the party politics.
CU BCL has divided into two groups. One is loyal to Awami League city unit President ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury and another is hardcore supporter of General Secretary AJM Nasir Uddin, campus sources said.
Although a new committee was formed on July 19, 2015, the BCL men are still engaging in fighting making the campus unstable. The central BCL committee announced the CU unit committee making Alamgir Tipu as president and HM Fazle Rabbi Sujon as general secretary. Tipu is loyal to AJM Nasir Uddin while Sujon is backed by Mohiuddin.
Earlier, the central BCL committee had dissolved the BCL committee at CU after a factional clash between two groups on June 6, 2014, said campus sources.
The committee consisting 219 members was formed in June 26, on 2011 making Mamunul Haque as president and MA Khaled as general secretary.
The two main stream factions led by Alamgir Tipu and Fazle Rabbi Sujon frequently locked into clashes nearly four times after formation of the new committee.
This year, BCL leaders and activists fought among themselves at least eighth time till November 2. At least 30 persons, including four policemen, were injured in BCL factional clash on that day.
Tipu group clashed with Sujon group at Shah Amanat dormitory over grabbing seat at Shuhrawardi dormitory triggering an unrest situation on the campus on August 25. Earlier, AJM Nasir backed two factions – Sixty Nine and Banglar Mukh – clashed injuring 12 people, including two policemen.
Last year, BCL factions clashed 14th time on the campus that left one student dead and over 50 injured.
Former General Secretary MA Khaled told the Dhaka Tribune that lack of co-ordination among BCL leaders and activists was responsible for the clash. “Party men should maintain chain of command to avoid clashes on the campus,” he said.
