8 injured in Barisal AL factional clash

At least eight activists have been injured in factional clash of ruling Awami League over nomination of party candidate in local government election at Bakerganj municipal town of Barisal district.

Witnesses said the clash ensued between the followers of Parvin Talukdar, former lawmaker and district AL leader and followers of Lokman Hossain Dakua, Bakerganj municipal mayor and upazila AL secretary on Saturday noon.

Many followers went to visit and welcome Parvin Talukdar in the morning at upazila duck-bungalow long days after she returned to native area and talked about upcoming local government election.

This created tension among the followers of Lokman Dakua who propagated that dedicated workers of the party, not the 'cuckoos of spring',  should get preferences in selection and nomination of party candidates in local government election.

Over this issue follower of both groups engaged in altercation and chasing, counter-chasing took place. And they clashed with brick bats, lethal weapons, witnesses said.

At least 8 activists from both factions were injured in the clash, said Anwar Hossain, Bakerganj police station officer in charge.

He said police rushed to the spot on information and controlled the situation.
