A Dhaka magistrate yesterday sent BNP acting secretary general Mirza Islam Alamgir to jail, a day after the High Court ordered him to surrender before a trial court in three violence cases.
Metropolitan Magistrate Md Maruf Hossain passed the order after Fakhrul surrendered before the court around 3:30pm complying with Monday’s High Court order.
He also sought bail in the cases filed with Paltan police on charges of vandalising and torching vehicles in the city in January last year.
His counsel Khandaker Mahbub Hossain told the court that Fakhrul’s health condition was not good and that he needed to go to Singapore for treatment on November 24. He also mentioned that his client would not breach bail conditions.
After the hearing, the magistrate said: “This court has no jurisdiction to grant him bail in the cases as the Appellate Division earlier rejected his bail extension petitions.”
The court also directed the prison authorities to consider his physical condition and ensure his treatment in the prison.
Protesting the order, the pro-BNP lawyers brought out a procession on the court premises.
Fakhrul secured High Court bail in the cases on June 21. On July 13, the Supreme Court granted him six-week bail on medical grounds. He was freed from jail on July 14 and went to the US for treatment. The bail was further extended on August 31 and October 6.
The BNP leader is facing at least 89 cases.
