BCL men trade fire with Jubo League in Chittagong

Members of Jubo League and Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) have once again locked into a clash at Central Railway Building (CRB) premises in Chittagong city’s Tigerpass area over establishing supremacy.

Witnesses and police sources said the clash took place between the ex-central BCL’s assistant secretary Saiful Islam Limon group and central Jubo league’s deputy-finance secretary Helal Akbar Chowdhury Babar group at around 12pm on Sunday.

Police detained one Alauddin, 22, from Ishaq Nagor area and seized two motorbikes from the spot after the incident, said Chittagong Metropolitan Police’s Assistant Commissioner (AC) Md Moinuddin of Kotwali Zone.

Earlier, the same groups had locked another clash at the same area on October 12 over establishing supremacy leaving several injured.

Witness said a chase and counter-chase ensued in CRB-Sat Rastar Matha area when the activists of Babar beat up a man of Limon group, triggering a clash between two groups.

As the news spread, the activists of both of the groups gathered at CRB premises and took position by equipping with firearms and sharp weapons and clashed each other, turning the important government office into battle field for half an hour, said the witnesses.

Being informed, police rushed to the spot and dispersed the clashing activists by charging batons, said Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Jasim Uddin of Kotwali police station.

Police also opened three round of blank fire to bring the situation under control, said the OC adding that police detained one person from the spot in this connection.

Additional police force and RAB personnel were deployed at the area after the incident to avert further tension.

Contacted, Saiful Islam Limon told the Dhaka Tribune: “Using political identity Akbar has engaged with terror while the supporters of Akbar attacked our man in planned way without any provocation.”
