Mahbub: Country under indirect one-party rule

BNP standing committee member Lt Gen (retd) Mahbubur Rahman yesterday alleged that the country is now under the grip of an ‘indirect one-party rule’.

“There is no democracy in the country and no existence of opposition in the parliament. The country is now under the grasp of an indirect one-party rule,” he said.

The BNP leader seemed to be implying that with an absolute majority in the parliament, the opposition was ineffectual.

Mahbub came up with the remark at a discussion at the National Press Club organised by Jatiya Jubo Sanghati. The discussion was organised in memory of former prime minister Kazi Zafar Ahmed who died on August 27 this year.

The BNP leader lambasted the government for what he described as a serious slide in the law and order situation.

“Now people are suffering from a sense of insecurity while foreigners are being killed. Bombs were exploded at a gathering of Shia Muslims. This is a kind of attack that we have never seen in the past. In fact, we are passing through a very tough time,” he said.

The lack of democracy and leadership crisis are the main problems that the country is now facing, observed Mahbub.

The BNP leader called upon people from all walks of life to get united in order to restore democracy to the country.

“Leaders and activists of the BNP and the 20-party alliance will have to vow that they will engage themselves in a united movement. The movement will be for restoring democratic rule to the country," he added.
