The leaders of Awami League-led 14-party have observed that more top-level BNP leaders would quit after vice-chairman Shamsher Mubin Chowdhury due to lack of confidence on the party’s leadership.
“Shamsher Mubin’s resignation is BNP’s internal issue. So it will not be fair to make any comment about this … However, it means that the flow of resignation has started in BNP’s top brass,” ruling alliance Spokesperson and Health Minister Mohammad Nasim said yesterday.
Nasim, also an Awami League Presidium member, said this in response to a query after a joint meeting of the alliance at AL President Sheikh Hasina’s political office at Dhanmondi.
Earlier in the day, Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif said: “Many BNP leaders who believe in the spirit of the Liberation War have started resigning from the party after observing the recent political activities planned by BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and her son Tarique Rahman.”
Terming Mubin’s resignation a right decision, he mentioned that Khaleda’s favouritism towards Jamaat-e-Islami and violent political practices were behind its leaders’ quitting the party.
Former foreign secretary Mubin resigned from the party’s all the posts on health grounds. He submitted the resignation letter to BNP’s acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Wednesday.
Earlier in July, the BNP chief alleged that the government was attempting to create a rift in the party. “BNP is still the most popular party and that is why the government is trying its best to split it,” Khaleda said.
When contacted, senior Awami League leaders refused to comment on the matter.
Presidium members Amir Hossain Amu and Tofail Ahmed said that they had not heard about Mubin’s resignation.
