The BNP yesterday underscored the need for national consensus to resolve the prevailing crisis including militancy and terrorism.
The party also said the national unity is not taking place just because of dirty politics.
“We are very much concerned about various issues especially after the killings of two foreigners. Militancy is a big problem around the globe,” Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, acting secretary general of the party, said.
All the conscious people and those who believe in democracy should get united against militancy. But unfortunately this is not happening due to dirty politics, he observed.
Addressing a press briefing at the party’s Nayapaltan headquarters, Fakhrul said, “We could not reach any national consensus do to this bad politics and it is the government that has to take the initiative.”
Fakhrul alleged that the ruling party leaders are giving contradictory statements on the murders of foreigners. Such conflicting statements will encourage the extremists to take the opportunity which “we do not expect to happen at all.”
The BNP leader said now a democratic atmosphere is needed to overcome the crisis.
“We want a democratic atmosphere. There is no alternative to democracy. We think militancy and extremism will never be able to raise their heads as long as the practice of democracy is there in the country.”
Fakhrul said the BNP-led four-party alliance had to face the same problem when it was in power. The alliance made it clear before public that terrorism is not part of Islam.
