AL to accord reception to PM for Champions of the Earth

The Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is set to be accorded a mass reception when she returns home on October 3 after ending the 70th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The ruling Awami League will give her the mass reception at Hazrat Shajalal International Airport in the capital for her achievement of “Champions of the Earth” award in New York, the US, in recognition of Bangladesh’s far-reaching initiatives to combat climate change affects.

A meeting of Awami League central committee decided to greet the premier yesterday evening at party President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s political office at Dhanmondi in the capital.

The meeting was chaired by member of Awami League presidium and Health Minister Mohammad Nasim.

“Leaders and activists of Awami League, its associated bodies will queue up with flowers on either side of the road from Hazrat Shahjalal Airport to Gonobhaban to welcome her on her return from New York,” Nasim briefed reporters after emerging from the meeting.

Awami League will hold a joint meeting with the party’s associated bodies on September 30 at Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi political office while Dhaka City Unit Awami League will also hold a joint meeting at the party’s headquarters at Bangabandhu Avenue in the capital today to make the reception programme a success, says a press release.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina received the “Champions of the Earth” award in New York, the US, in recognition of Bangladesh’s far-reaching initiatives to combat climate change affects.

The United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) Executive Director Achim Steiner handed the award over to the prime minister at a gala reception in at Hotel Cipriani Le Specialita on Sunday evening.

Sheikh Hasina was nominated as one of the winners of the UNEP’s top environmental accolade in Policy Leadership category for her outstanding leadership in combating the adverse impacts of climate change.
