BNP to stage demo on September 6

The BNP-led 20-party alliance yesterday announced they would stage demonstrations across the country on September 6 protesting the price hikes of electricity and gas.

Although the party initially called the demonstrations for September 5, they shifted the date as the country’s Hindu community would observe Janmashtami on that date.

This protest is the first programme since the opposition alliance’s three-month blockade.

In a press release earlier in the day, BNP Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan said: “The government has taken an illogical, anti-people decision and transferred the burden to the people after looting thousands of crores of taka from quick rental power plants.”

Nazrul urged the public to unite in order to protest the price hike. Otherwise, the government would hike gas prices again in December, he said.
