Law minister hails bar council polls result

Law Minister Anisul Huq yesterday said that sweeping victory of the pro-government panel in Bangladesh Bar Council elections was a victory of justice over anarchy.

“Lawyers’ right choice of establishing the rule of law and discipline which was absent in the council for the last few years has been reflected in the result,” he said greeting the members of Sammilita Ainjibi Samannay Parishad.

The panel bagged 10 out of the total 14 posts in the elections held across the country on Wednesday. Pro-BNP Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Oikya Parishad panel got the four other posts.

He thanked the winners for their relentless efforts in the campaign where they successfully conveyed the message of development of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to the lawyers’ community.

Anisul also expressed his gratitude to the country’s lawyers for making the right choice and strengthening the hands of Sheikh Hasina in her efforts to build “Sonar Bangla” as dreamt by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

He called upon the newly-elected members to work with sincerity for the greater interest of the lawyers’ community so that the rule of law and discipline are re-established in the Bar Council.

Some 43,302 lawyers cast their votes to elect the 14-member executive body out of 61 contestants. The executive body elects the vice-chairman while the attorney general is given the post of chairman as per rules.
