A Jubo League leader was killed by local thugs in the capital’s Mohammadpur area on Sunday night.
The victim, Mohammad Sohel Bali, 28, from Chhilarchar in Madaripur district, was secretary general of Jubo League’s Dhaka Udyan unit in Mohammadpur.
Police arrested a man named Badrul yesterday in connection with the murder, after the victim’s father filed a murder case in the afternoon, in which he listed Badrul and six others as accused.
Talking to the Dhaka Tribune, Sohel’s father Abdul Mannan said Sohel ran a multipurpose cooperative society in the area and left home around 6:40pm on Sunday to collect money for that.
Around 10pm, the caretaker of his neighbour’s house, Firoz, informed him that Sohel had been stabbed in front of a tea stall on Road 1 in Dhaka Udyan area.
When he went there, locals told him his son had been taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Rushing there, he learnt that the on-duty doctors had declared Sohel dead around 11:50pm.
Later, Mannan filed the murder case with Mohammadpur police station, accusing seven people including Badrul.
In the case statement, Mannan said witnesses had told him that Badrul and his six associates attacked Sohel when he reached the tea stall and stabbed him in the right shoulder. They also snatched away Tk65,000 which Sohel had collected for the cooperative that evening.
When locals went after them, they fled the scene, the statement said.
Sohel’s brother Jewel Bali said Sohel was murdered because he had stopped Badrul and his gang from extorting poor people and harassing girls in the area.
He alleged that the goons had also attacked their house around 20 days ago.
Mohammadpur police OC Jamal Uddin Mir confirmed Badrul’s arrest but declined to disclose any other information as the investigation is still in progress.
“We are trying to figure out the motive behind the attack as well as locate the rest of the accused,” he said.
