ACC quizzes BNP leader Taimur in graft case

The Anti-Corruption Commission yesterday questioned BNP leader Taimur Alam Khandoker regarding his alleged involvement with corruption misusing power in allocating 11 shops of Ondho O Bodhir Organisation (an organisation for sight and hearing-impaired people).

The commission’s Assistant Director Sheikh Abdus Salam interrogated him at the ACC headquarters at the capital’s Segunbagicha from 10:30am to 1pm.

An official from the commission requesting anonymity told the Dhaka Tribune: “During BNP-Jamaat’s tenure Taimur Alam allocated 11 shops of Ondho O Bodhir Organisation abusing power in the name of Hosne Ara Chowdhury, wife of Haris Chowdhury – the political secretary to then prime minister Khaleda Zia.”

Taimur was the president of that organisation at that time and still holds that position.

After receiving a complaint against Taimur, the ACC in its primary inquiry found proof of the allegations.

The commission also learned that as Hosne Ara failed to pay the instalments, Taimur again allocated those shops to the same person without permission from the executive committee of the organisation, the official said.

The commission also found proof that Taimur recruited staff members in the organisation illegally and embezzled around Tk1 crore.

Taimur is now the president of Narayanganj district BNP.
