Chhatra Dal president placed on 8-day remand

Two courts in Dhaka have granted eight days of remand for Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal President Rajib Ahsan for questioning in four violence cases.

Police sought to place Rajib in remand for 40 days yesterday for the cases, filed with Shahbagh, Motijheel and Paltan police stations on charges of attack on Awami League lawmaker Chhabi Biswas in December and vandalism and arson during the BNP-led 20-party alliance’s anti-government movement in the capital in January.

Hearing the remand plea, Metropolitan Magistrate Shamsul Arefin granted six days of remand in three cases – two filed with Paltan and one with Motijheel police station – for vandalism.

Later, Metropolitan Magistrate Tareq Moinul Islam Bhuiyan granted two more days of remand in a case filed with Shahbagh police station for an attack on Chhabi Biswas.

Rajib’s counsel Md Sanaullah Miah filed separate bail petitions before the courts, but the courts rejected the pleas.

Rajib was arrested with five of his associates in Patuakhali on July 19, allegedly with yaba tablets in his possession.
