Habiganj mayor attacked in jail, BNP calls hartal

The BNP has called a dawn-to-dusk hartal for Sunday in Habiganj, protesting attack on the detained municipality Mayor, GK Gaus.

GK Gaus, an accused in former finance minister Shah AMS Kibria murder case came under an attack inside the district jail on Saturday, the eid day.

Jailer Shamim Iqbal of Habiganj Jail told the Dhaka Tribune: “One Ilias, a convict in a murder case attacked the detained mayor around 12 noon while GK Gaus was walking inside the jail, leaving him injured.

“He has been admitted at the jail hospital immediately after the incident.”

“However, the reason behind the attack could not be known immediately. The investigation is underway and action will be taken against the attacker,” added the jail official.

Following the attack, hundreds of BNP members took position outside the jail and staged protest.

The agitated BNP leaders and activists barricaded the road in front of the jail.

UNO Ashfaqul Islam along with other high officials of the district police was trying to bring the situation under control till filing the report at 1pm.
