After its botched effort to topple the government, the BNP is now concentrating on reorganising the party by gathering information on grassroots leaders and activists.
The reorganising process of the party will gain full momentum after the release of senior leaders from the jail, said party leaders.
They expect most of the senior leaders will secure bail or be able to come out of jail before Eid-ul-Fitr.
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia wants to reorganise Jubo Dal first, and she has already asked its President Moazzem Hossain Alal and Senior Vice-President Abdus Salam to collect information about honest and dedicated leaders.
Khaleda assigned some senior and mid-ranking leaders to collect information from upazilas and districts across the country about the honest, dedicated and experienced leaders.
“There are some stages in the reorganising process. The first step is now going on. We are collecting information, and after that we will start the reorganising process in full swing,” Abdullah Al Noman, vice-chairman of the party, said.
Those who were at the helm of the street movement at the local level, those who were imprisoned, tortured, faced cases and came under attack by ruling party men will qualify for leadership, said a leader seeking anonymity.
An assistant office secretary, a leader of Dhaka city unit BNP, and some mid-ranking leaders are collecting information.
They have already submitted a report to the BNP chairperson on those who have played a vital role in the city corporation polls, one of them said.
The report includes names of some senior leaders who were inactive during the movement. It also described some leaders as troublemakers who caused a breach in the party.
Those leaders distanced themselves from the street movement; some of them even worked against the party decision, the report read.
“The report on whether the leadership was capable of leading the movement and their role at the field level will be submitted to Madam [Khaleda] by the end of Ramadan,” a BNP leader, privy to details, said.
This person, who did not want to be named, said the key to collecting information is to sort out the honest and competent leadership capable of revamping the party to an expected level.
