Awami League to hold two meetings today

The Awami League will hold two meetings – one with the party’s different levels of leaders and the other with the two city mayors of Dhaka North and Dhaka South – to discuss the celebration meant to honour Sheikh Hasina on May 29.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, also the president of the Awami League, will be given a warm reception for her successful diplomatic negotiation over the 1974 Land Boundary Agreement (LBA) ratified by the Indian parliament on May 7.

The reception will be held at the historic Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital around at 2:30pm on May 29.

The first meeting of Awami League and the party leaders of adjoining districts of Dhaka will begin at 4pm today at Awami League President Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi office, said a press release yesterday.

Presidents, general secretaries and the party lawmakers of Mymenshingh, Tangail, Gazipur, Manikganj, Munsiganj, Narayanganj and Dhaka City North and South units will attend the meeting with Awami League central leaders.

The second meeting of Awami League and its all affiliated bodies, Dhaka City Unit president, general secretary and two mayors – Annisul Haque and Syeed Khokon – will begin at 5pm at the same venue.

In a statement, Awami league General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam urged all concerned to attend the meeting on time.

Earlier on May 15, a joint meeting of the Awami League-led 14-party alliance and the pro-Awami League professionals formed a 202-member committee at the Dhanmondi office to make the reception a success.

Meanwhile, the Awami League will also celebrate the 116th birth anniversary of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam today, says a separate press release.

The programme includes placing wreaths at the grave of the poet on Dhaka University campus at 7am.
