Taimur gets BNP nod

The decision was taken at a meeting at the BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office yesterday evening. BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Narayanganj district BNP leaders were present in the meeting where Taimur was asked to preparare to vie for the NCC polls on party ticket. Taimur, however, while talking to the Dhaka Tribune after the meeting, expressed his reluctance to contest the polls as ‘the election would not be a fair one’. He also had told the BNP chairperson about his reluctance, he informed. It had been widely assumed that Taimur would be nominated for the mayoral post by BNP. Earlier, at his Masdair residence in Narayanganj, Taimur told the Dhaka Tribune: “I am not interested to compete the election as I don’t have any confidence in the present Election Comission (EC). A large section of the media also will not favour the (BNP). For these reasons, I am reluctant to vie for the mayoral post.” “Since the morning, scores of party leaders and activists are coming to my house to request me to participate in the polls. So many calls are coming that I even switched off my cell phone. I have told everyone that the party chairperson’s decision is the final one,” he also said. “Moreover, during the last NCC polls, after getting party nomination, I was dumped only seven hours before the election for which reason I still don’t know,” he said in reply to a query of Dhaka Tribune.
