Bangladeshi-born Rupa Huq appointed UK shadow minister for Home Affairs

Dr Rupa Huq, British Labour Party member of House of Commons, has been picked as the shadow minister for Home Affairs by her party leader Jeremy Corbyn on Friday. The move made the Bangladeshi-born MP, elected from Ealing Central and Acton constituency, a Labour Party frontbencher in the British parliament. She bagged 22,002 votes on the May 7, 2015 UK General Elections. Rupa is also senior lecturer at the sociology department of the Kingston University. Her ancestral home is in Pabna. “Honoured to take up a shadow ministerial position in Home Affairs on Labour frontbench,” Rupa tweeted after the news of her induction came out.

Earlier on October 10, Tulip Rizwana Siddiq, niece of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has been inducted into the shadow cabinet as shadow minister of early years education. She will be joining Shadow minister of education Angela Rayner’s team. Earlier, Rushanara Ali, the first British lawmaker with roots in Bangladesh, performed the responsibility as the shadow minister of International Development and Education after being elected as an MP. The debut of Rushanara Ali, who hails from Biswanath in Sylhet, in the House of Commons was made through the previous UK polls in 2010. The Oxford-educated Rushanara won those elections with a margin of around 12,000 votes.
