Mahmud Hossain Opu honored by US State Department for global photojournalism initiative

Acclaimed Bangladeshi photojournalist Mahmud Hossain Opu has been formally recognized by the US Department of State for his participation in the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) initiative on Wednesday, A Global Moment in Time (GMiT - a project that brought together photojournalists from around the world to document the human experience during the Covid-19 pandemic.

At a ceremony held at the American Center in Dhaka, Mahmud received his official IVLP certificate from Sharlina Hussain-Morgan, Public Engagement Director of the US Embassy in Dhaka.

He was also presented with a special edition of the GMiT photobook, which features his compelling visual narratives capturing the resilience of Bangladeshi communities during the pandemic.

“This recognition is deeply meaningful,” Mahmud said.

“It marks the end of a transformative journey and the beginning of new possibilities to tell stories that matter.”

The GMiT initiative, conducted through hybrid sessions between 2021 and 2022, brought together nearly 100 global participants to explore themes of peace and justice, diversity and inclusion, and the role of media in crisis.

Mahmud’s contributions were selected for the final photobook, which showcases perspectives from across continents.

Mahmud’s work has appeared in leading international outlets including The New York Times, National Geographic, and The Economist.

He was chosen for IVLP based on his professional achievements and leadership in documentary photojournalism.

The IVLP, administered by the US Department of State, is the premier professional exchange program for emerging global leaders.

The Global Moment in Time initiative aimed to foster cross-cultural dialogue and elevate the voices of journalists documenting pivotal moments in history.
