Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on Sunday expressed deep shock at the death of Major General (Retd) KM Shafiullah, one of the sector commanders of the Liberation War and a former army chief.
In a condolence message, Prof Yunus said that KM Shafiullah played an important role as a sector commander during the 1971 Liberation War.
In 1971, he was the second-in-command of the 2nd East Bengal Regiment in Joydebpur, the chief adviser mentioned.
Shafiullah led the "S" Force during the Liberation War and received the title of "Bir Uttam" for his remarkable contribution to the Liberation War, he added.
After the country achieved independence, Yunus said, KM Shafiullah served as the army chief from 1972 to 1975.
The chief adviser said: "We remember with gratitude his contribution to the country and its people. People from all walks of life in Bangladesh will remember his heroic works forever with respect."
Prof Yunus prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul of KM Shafiullah and expressed deep sympathy to the bereaved family.
KM Shafiullah breathed his last this morning while undergoing treatment at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in the capital. He was 90.
