Taking into account her age and overall physical condition, doctors are exploring additional treatment options beyond medication to improve the health of Khaleda Zia, who is currently receiving medication-based treatment for her liver, kidneys, diabetes, blood pressure, arthritis and heart conditions.
Speaking to journalists outside the London Clinic, a specialized private hospital in the United Kingdom, on Tuesday night local time, BNP Standing Committee Member Dr AZM Zahid Hossain provided an update on the party chairperson’s treatment.
He said a medical board, comprising specialists from the Johns Hopkins Hospital in the United States and doctors from both London and Bangladesh, had reviewed all of Khaleda Zia's medical test reports.
Zahid added that two more specialist doctors were expected to examine her within the next couple of days.
While Khaleda Zia was currently on medication, the medical board was considering the best comprehensive treatment plan to ensure her recovery, the BNP leader said.
This included determining how to provide the best care under one roof, beyond just medication, he told reporters. “Some extended members of the medical board will also provide their opinions before finalizing the plan.”
Zahid noted that the current treatment plan took into account the challenges Khaleda Zia had faced due to being detained, receiving inadequate medical care and not being allowed to seek treatment abroad before.
