Trekker and mountaineer MA Mohit, who has previously scaled Mount Everest twice, is set to go on an expedition to climb the approximately 22,350 foot high Mount Ama Dablam in the Himalayas.
He is scheduled to leave Dhaka for Nepal on October 15. Mohit will begin his 30-day long expedition from Lukla airport, and is expected to reach the peak of the mountain sometime from November 10-15.
The veteran mountaineer was handed the expedition flag at a press conference organized by the Bangla Mountaineering and Trekking Club, at the National Press Club in Dhaka on Friday.
Speaking at the conference, Mohit said that climbing to the peak of Mount Ama Dablam would be a prestigious achievement as it is a very difficult climb.
“Climbing on snow and ice is much easier than on rocks, and a large portion of this expedition involves rock climbing,” he explained.
Apart from climbing Mount Everest twice, MA Mohit has also climbed to the peaks of Mount Cho-Oyu and Mount Manaslu, once each.
Five other trekkers from the Bangla Mountaineering and Trekking Club will accompany Mohit on the expedition, but they will only go as far as the base camp.
Architect and freedom fighter Mubasshar Hussain expressed his wish to see these trekkers one day emulate Mohit’s feat of reaching the peak of Mount Everest.
Congratulating the mountaineers, economist and Power and Participation Research Centre Chairman Dr Hossain Zillur Rahman said: “This achievement will not only be an achievement for Mohit, but also for all citizens of Bangladesh.”
The expedition is being jointly sponsored by Ispahani Tea Ltd, Union Bank Ltd, and Channel i.
Deputy Managing Director of Union Bank Hasan Iqbal was present at the conference as the special guest.
