Jamaat-e-Islami lawyer Shishir Monir has said the decision on the parliamentary membership of Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam rests with the speaker and the Election Commission (EC).
He made the remarks while speaking to reporters in front of the Annex Building on Monday afternoon.
Shishir said the government would take legal action against Nazrul, who was arrested in an abetment-to-suicide case filed with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station.
He also clarified that Nazrul is not affiliated with Jamaat-e-Islami.
“Whether he retains his parliamentary seat depends on the speaker and the Election Commission,” Shishir said.
On the evening of September 20, residents of NAM Bhaban spotted the hanging body of Mariyam Khatun through the window of flat 203 on the third floor of Building 5. Police were subsequently informed and visited the scene.
Police initially took Nazrul and his first wife, Maksuda Begum, to the police station for questioning.
Later, Mariyam’s father, Masum Billah, filed a case alleging abetment to suicide.
Following formalities on Monday, Nazrul and Maksuda were formally arrested in connection with the case.
