Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad on Sunday urged members of parliament to remain prepared for their scheduled speeches and strictly adhere to their allotted time as the House entered the final stage of discussions on the proposed national budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year.
Expressing concern over the absence of listed speakers when their names were called, the Speaker urged Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni to ensure that MPs receive advance notice before their turn to speak.
"There is a list, yet when members are called, they are not present. Please give them an early warning so they remain prepared," the Speaker said.
Addressing lawmakers, he also appealed to them to conclude their speeches within the allocated time.
"I humbly request all speakers to finish within the stipulated time. Please keep an eye on the clock," Hafiz Uddin said, adding that newly elected MPs should begin wrapping up their remarks when only one minute remains, using the final moments to summarise their points or highlight issues concerning their constituencies if necessary.
Responding to the Speaker, Chief Whip Moni informed the House that all speeches on the budget must be completed on Sunday as there will be no further opportunity for members who failed to deliver their remarks.
He said Monday morning's sitting will feature speeches by the leader of the house, the leader of the opposition and the finance minister, while in the afternoon sitting, the Finance Bill is scheduled to be passed.
Moni also reminded lawmakers that the Appropriation Bill must be passed before Maghrib on June 30 to meet constitutional requirements, allowing sufficient time for the President to give assent before midnight.
"There is no scope for extending the schedule. Everyone must finish their speeches today," he said, urging MPs to observe their allotted time so that the House could complete its business within the planned timetable.
