Crime surges in govt’s first 100 days, says Rumeen Farhana

Brahmanbaria-2 MP Barrister Rumeen Farhana on Monday expressed dissatisfaction over the country’s law and order situation in the Natonal Parliament.

Speaking under Rule 71 during the second session of the 13th National Parliament, she cited figures on murder, abduction and violence against women and children during the government’s first 100 days.

Deputy Speaker Kayser Kamal presided over the session.

Referring to the empty seat of the home minister, Rumeen said: “The home minister was supposed to be present here today (Monday), but when I looked ahead, his seat was empty, which means he is not present. What can be done, I will speak in his absence.”

Citing a report by Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB), she said: “The crime graph in the country has soared in the government’s first 100 days.”

Rumeen said that in March and April alone, the country recorded 605 murders, 294 snatching incidents, 90 robberies and 196 abductions. She added that there were 129 attacks on police and 2,214 thefts during the period.

She also said 3,496 incidents of violence against women and children were reported during the period. Of them, 78 to 102 women were raped, 30 to 36 were victims of gang rape and the number of child rape victims stood at 49 to 71.

Rumeen said: “These figures clearly show how fragile and alarming the law-and-order situation in Bangladesh has been over the past three months.”

She added that the government’s overall success or failure would depend equally on the economy and law and order.

She also said: “Fifty percent of the government’s success or failure will depend on these two issues, the economy and law and order while the remaining 50% will depend on other ministries.”

She said it would have been easier to present the record of the home minister’s failure more clearly if he had been present in parliament.
