Kayser Kamal elected deputy speaker of 13th parliament

The 13th parliament on Thursday elected State Minister for Land Kayser Kamal as the deputy speaker during its first session.

Session President Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain informed the House that only one nomination had been submitted for the post of deputy speaker.

The nominee, Kayser Kamal, had agreed to take on the responsibility, Mosharraf told lawmakers.

He then invited MP Ruhul Quddus Talukder to place the proposal before the House.

Talukder formally moved the motion, which was seconded by MP Ashraful Uddin.

The proposal was subsequently placed before the House and was adopted with a unanimous “yes” vote.

Kayser Kamal was elected deputy speaker after the parliament earlier in the day elected BNP Standing Committee member and MP Major (retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed as the speaker.

The elections took place during the first sitting of the 13th parliament, which convened a month after the parliamentary elections and nearly 20 months after the formation of the interim government following the July Uprising of 2024.

Veteran BNP leader Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain presided over the sitting with the unanimous backing of lawmakers in the absence of the speaker and deputy speaker of the 12th parliament.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman entered the chamber at 10:55am, where MPs from both the government and opposition benches welcomed him by thumping their desks.

It was the first time he attended the opening session of parliament as an MP.

With the speaker’s chair vacant, the session initially proceeded under Mosharraf’s supervision.

Tarique later stood and proposed Mosharraf’s name to preside over the sitting and begin the proceedings.
